From Photo to 3D Art: The 72 Wonders Building in Zhangjiajie

Sometimes the best 3D prints start with a photograph that already tells a story.

A customer recently sent us this striking night-time photo they took of the 72 Wonders Building in Zhangjiajie, China. With its traditional Chinese-inspired architecture, glowing rooftops and dramatic beams of light cutting through the night sky, we thought it would make a fantastic HueForge.

Turning the Photo into a HueForge

Rather than trying to reproduce every colour from the original photograph, we wanted the finished piece to have its own identity.

We decided to build the HueForge around red and yellow, inspired by the colours of the Chinese flag. These colours also worked beautifully with the original scene, where the warm lighting and illuminated rooftops already created strong reds, oranges and golden tones.

Using red and yellow as the feature colours allowed us to highlight the architecture while giving the finished print a deeper connection to China.

Creating Something More Than a Copy

HueForge works by using carefully selected colours and different printed layer heights to create depth, contrast and shading from a flat photograph.

For this print, darker shades form the night sky and shadows, lighter greys bring out the enormous structure of the buildings, and the red and yellow details draw attention to the illuminated rooftops, streets and architectural features.

The result is very different from simply printing the photograph. It has a textured, almost illustrated appearance that changes depending on the angle and lighting.

We particularly love how the yellow sections across the lower part of the print give the impression that the streets and buildings are glowing.

By choosing colours associated with China, we wanted to create a more poignant and meaningful HueForge rather than simply recreating the photograph.

The original image captures a memorable place and moment. The finished 3D print turns that memory into something physical that can be displayed on a wall, shelf or desk.
