From Photo to Light: Creating a Monochrome Lithophane

Starting with the Original Photograph

Every lithophane begins with a meaningful photo. Whether it is a pet, a family member or another special memory, the process starts with choosing an image that has good contrast and clear detail.

A lithophane works by converting the light and dark areas of a photograph into different thicknesses of material. Lighter parts of the image are printed thinner so that more light can pass through, while darker areas are printed thicker to reduce the light.

Preparing the Image for 3D Printing

Before printing, the photograph is converted into a detailed 3D relief. The image may be adjusted slightly to improve the final result, helping to preserve the most important features and fine details.

The finished model often looks quite subtle before it is illuminated. Without a light behind it, the image appears as a raised white surface, with the details created through gentle variations in thickness.

The lithophane is then carefully 3D printed in white filament and placed into a clean black frame. The simple monochrome style keeps the focus on the image itself.
