Meet BORG – Our 3ft 3D Printed Alien

Following on from our previous alien print, we decided to continue the extra-terrestrial theme, but this time, we went a little bigger.

A lot bigger.

We found this design by Raceit17 and couldn't not print it.

Our latest project is a 3-foot-tall 3D printed alien, printed using Bambu Lab Translucent PLA filament.

Why BORG?

The name came from the four translucent colours used throughout the print:

👽 BORG

🔵 Blue
🟠 Orange
🔴 Red
🟢 Green

It seemed like the perfect name once the full model was assembled.

Printed in Multiple Parts

At 3 feet tall, BORG was far too large to print as a single piece, so the model was split into multiple sections and printed separately.

Each part was printed individually before being assembled to create the full-size alien. This is one of the great things about 3D printing — even very large models can be produced by breaking them down into manageable pieces and joining them together afterwards.

Printed in Translucent Filament

One of the things that makes BORG stand out is the use of Bambu Translucent PLA filament.

The translucent material allows light to pass through the printed sections, giving the alien a completely different appearance when illuminated.

To make the most of this effect, we added two LED strip lights inside the model, which really bring out the different colours and details — especially in a darker room.

Another Fun Varbits Project

Not every 3D print has to be practical.

Sometimes it’s simply about finding an interesting model, trying something different and seeing what can be created with 3D printing.

BORG was a great opportunity for us to experiment with large-scale printing, translucent filament and lighting, while continuing the alien theme from our previous project.

And at around 3 feet tall, he’s definitely one of the harder Varbits prints to miss!
